1607 to 1707
England overseas
After failed attempts such as Roanoke, the English found Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. Colonies follow in New England and the Caribbean, where sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans make Barbados and Jamaica rich. The East India Company, chartered in 1600, sets up trading posts in India. In 1707 England and Scotland unite as Great Britain.
