661 to 680
Muawiya in Damascus
Muawiya, long the governor of Syria, becomes caliph in 661 and makes Damascus his capital. He relies on the Arab tribes of Syria and on the old Byzantine administration. His fleets and armies raid Byzantine Anatolia. Before he dies in 680 he has his son Yazid recognised as heir, making the caliphate hereditary.
