The kingdoms, empires and states Democratic Republic of the Congo fought or stood against, from the first to today.
- Portuguese Angola1622 to 1665
Kongo, once Portugal's partner, clashes with the Portuguese colony of Angola from the 1620s. At Mbwila in 1665 a Portuguese army kills King António I, and Kongo falls into decades of civil war.
- Swahili-Arab traders of Tippu Tip1860 to 1894
Traders from the Zanzibar coast carve out a raiding and trading domain in the east. The Congo Free State fights them from 1892 and defeats them by 1894, presenting the war as a campaign against slavery.
- Congo Free State1885 to 1908
King Leopold's state conquers the basin with its army, the Force Publique, and imposes forced rubber collection through hostage taking, killings and mutilation. Revolts and mutinies are crushed, until international outrage ends Leopold's rule in 1908.
- Kingdom of Belgium1908 to 1960
Belgium rules the colony directly from 1908. Riots in Leopoldville in January 1959 speed up independence in 1960, but Belgian troops return within days to protect Belgians and help the Katanga secession.
- State of Katanga1960 to 1963
Led by Moise Tshombe and backed by Belgian officers and mining interests, the copper province of Katanga breaks away in July 1960. United Nations forces end the secession in January 1963.
Rwanda invades in 1996 to pursue Hutu militias behind the 1994 genocide, helps topple Mobutu, then backs rebels against Kabila from 1998. UN experts report Rwandan support for the M23, which seizes Goma and Bukavu in early 2025.
- Uganda1998 to 2003
Uganda's army occupies much of the north east during the Second Congo War and fights Rwanda's army in Kisangani in 1999 and 2000. The International Court of Justice later finds Uganda violated Congo's sovereignty and, in 2022, sets reparations at 325 million dollars.
