Rivals in history
The kingdoms, empires and states Rwanda fought or stood against, from the first to today.
- Kingdom of Burundi1700 to 1890
Rwanda's southern twin, with a similar language and society. The two kingdoms raid each other's borderlands for generations, notably in the time of Burundi's Mwami Ntare Rugamba in the early nineteenth century, until colonial rule freezes the frontier.
- Kingdom of Gisaka1800 to 1855
An eastern kingdom near the Kagera River that long resists Rwanda. It is conquered and annexed in the mid nineteenth century under Mwami Mutara II Rwogera.
- Kingdom of Nkore1870 to 1895
Under Kigeri IV Rwabugiri, Rwandan armies raid Nkore, a cattle kingdom in today's south west Uganda, in search of cattle and prestige. The raids end with Rwabugiri's death in 1895.
- German Empire1894 to 1916
Germany claims Rwanda from the 1880s and rules lightly through the royal court from 1897. In 1916, during the First World War, Belgian troops from the Congo invade and drive the Germans out.
- Belgium1916 to 1962
Belgium rules Rwanda for 46 years. It deposes Mwami Musinga in 1931, fixes ethnic labels on identity cards from 1933, and in 1959 switches its support from the Tutsi elite to the Hutu revolution before independence.
- Zaire1996 to 1997
Mobutu's Zaire shelters the Hutu militias and army that carried out the genocide. In 1996 Rwanda attacks their camps and backs Laurent Kabila's rebellion, which overthrows Mobutu in May 1997.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo1998 to 2003
After Kabila breaks with his former backers in 1998, Rwanda supports the RCD rebels in eastern Congo during the Second Congo War. Under a 2002 peace deal Rwanda pulls out its troops.
- Uganda1999 to 2022
The two allies against Mobutu turn on each other: their armies fight three battles in Kisangani, Congo, in 1999 and 2000. A new rift from 2019 closes the main Gatuna border crossing until January 2022.
- M23 rebellion in CongoSince 2012Still open
The M23 rebels seize Goma in 2012 before being defeated in 2013. They return in 2021 and take Goma again in January 2025 and Bukavu in February. UN experts say Rwanda arms and commands them; Rwanda denies it.
Today
Rwanda now
Rwanda -- a small and centralized country dominated by rugged hills and fertile volcanic soil -- has exerted disproportionate influence over the African Great Lakes region for centuries. A Rwandan kingdom increasingly dominated the region from the mid-18th century onward, with the Tutsi monarchs gradually extending the power of the royal court into peripheral areas and expanding their borders through military conquest.
